Maharashtra: Rice mill owner booked for power theft worth Rs1Cr

The flying squad of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) uncovered electricity theft amounting to Rs1 crore at a rice mill in Deolapar in Ramtek taluka.

MSEDCL also imposed a fine of Rs13.10 lakh as the compromise amount for the power theft, apart from Rs 1 crore recovery amount. MSEDCL officials stated that this is the first time such a significant amount of electricity theft was uncovered in the entire Vidarbha region. “An offence was also registered against the owner of the mill at Ramtek police station,” said the officials.

On December 30, MSEDCL officials reached the mill to inspect the electricity connection. They noticed that there was no seal on the three-phase industrial meter as well as the meter terminal cover. They also noticed that even though the mill was running at full load, the meter was showing less consumption. The officials discovered that electricity was being stolen at the mill.

“It was found that the customer illegally took electricity supply and used 4.90 lakh electricity units in the last 12 months, causing a financial loss of Rs1 crore to MSEDCL. An offence was registered against the customer identified as Shafiq Ansari at Ramtek police station,” said an MSEDCL official.
